The Mount Morgan Experience
Once home to the largest single mountain of gold on Earth, the Central Queensland mining town of Mount Morgan has created a “museum without walls” as part of the Queensland Heritage Trails Network.
The Mount Morgan Experience gives visitors a “whole of town experience” incorporating the historic railway station, museum, mine, cemetery and suspension bridges.
The Mount Morgan Experience also features interpretative displays that provide visitors with an insight into the life and times of days gone by.
Visitors have an opportunity to explore the town’s mining history by taking a Mount Morgan Mine site tour.
From the mine, visitors can then walk along Mount Morgan’s main street and learn about the Running of the Cutter, former shops and enterprises, fires and rebuilding, the Irish and Chinese communities and indigenous stories of Mount Morgan. Don’t miss the Private Victor Jones Memorial Suspension Bridge, dedicated to the first Australian in an Australian uniform to be killed during conflict.
Armed with a town map, visitors can also opt to walk or drive to the town’s various architectural landmarks within the town. The Arthur Timms lookout offers panoramic views of the town including the mine landscape, Dee River and hilly terrain.
