The Hub - Chillagoe
One of the most unusual places in Tropical North Queensland, Chillagoe offers the rare combination of a relic copper mine, historic town, limestone caves and Aboriginal rock paintings.
The Hub Chillagoe, a $2 million Queensland Heritage Trails Network project, was opened in July 2002. Located on the town's former Bank of Australasia site, The Hub is a one-stop shop to help visitors make the most of their Chillagoe experience. It houses a visitor information centre selling tickets to the town's major attraction, the Chillagoe Caves; a cafe; tour meeting place; Centrelink and post office.
A whole range of displays take visitors on a journey through time, from the creation of the Chillagoe region two billion years ago to the present day. Although located just over three hours west of Cairns, the Chillagoe region's dry climate of open savannah woodland is a vastly different experience from the rainforest and coastline of Cairns, just 205km east.
The township's major tourism attraction, the Chillagoe Caves, have been enhanced for visitors and the old Dimbulah railway station is now a visitor information centre with interpretive displays. The heritage-listed School of the Arts and Loudoun House Museum at nearby Irvinebank were also restored.Places to see in Queensland
