Australian Workers Heritage Centre, Barcaldine
They built the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Snowy Mountains Scheme, pioneered the Outback, laboured in factories, coal fields and cane fields, and worked in the home. They are the working men and women of Australia and their lives and their extraordinary legacy is honoured at the Australian Workers Heritage Centre in Barcaldine.
This award-winning attraction captures their indomitable spirit and records their stories – from the Great Shearers’ Strike which changed the course of the nation’s history, to the stories of railway workers and road gangs, teachers, nurses and nuns.
Many of the displays and exhibitions are housed in recreated historical work precincts including a turn of the century one-teacher school, police lock-up and railway station complete with carriage.
With $1.7 million in funding from the Queensland Heritage Trails Network, the Australian Workers Heritage Centre created the exhibition – 'A Lot on Her Hands'– to help redress the balance in our nation’s history books.
The work of both ordinary and eminent women of all ages and from all eras of Australian history has been explored, with fascinating stories of Indigenous and post World War Two immigrant women interwoven through the exhibition with those from Anglo Celtic backgrounds. Places to see in Queensland
