Dance Strategy
In response to calls from companies and individual artists in the Western Australian professional contemporary dance sector, the Department of Culture and the Arts provided support towards the Contemporary Dance Model Development (CDMD) project. The project facilitated a research and consultation process with the state’s subsidised small to medium contemporary dance sector between June - September 2007. The aim of the project was to develop practical strategies to support the long term growth and sustainability of contemporary dance in Western Australia.
Under the direction of the CDMD Steering Committee, project consultant Ms Alison McArdle produced the Future Moves report. The report details the current state of the sector and proposes staged strategies for growth and sustainability.
The Department is currently considering the recommendations proposed in the Future Moves report.

Poetry Initiatives
The Poetry Action Plan was produced by the Department of Culture and the Arts following the consultation process undertaken to develop Championing Creativity, the arts development policy framework for Western Australia 2004–2007. This consultation identified the marginalization of poetry in Western Australia, and reflected the findings of a national forum facilitated by the Australia Council for the Arts into the needs of poets across the country. The Poetry Action Plan was driven by the Western Australian poetry sector over a series of consultation sessions and forums during 2005-2006.
writingWA - the peak body for writing and associated activities in Western Australia, are implementing a range of activities with specific support from the State Government between 2007-2009. Initiatives for 2008 and 2009 were identified as part of a poetry consultancy in 2007. Please register to receive updates about these strategies and other opportunities that may arise with writingWA or the Department’s Project Officer: Visual Arts, Crafts and Writing.
Poets and poetry events are eligible to apply to all categories of the Arts Grants Program, and are encouraged to refer to the Publishing Assistance Program and “A Few New Words”. This category has been created to support the publication and marketing of poetry by new and emerging poets or work in new directions by established poets, with a $20,000 allocation for 2008 and a further $20,000 for grant rounds in 2009.
