Southampton is a coastal city sited on the Solent in the South East of England covering approximately 52 sq km. It is a UK port for shipping containers and the cruise industry and is the local city for one of the UK’s main airports.
There are approximately 228,600 people living in Southampton. With two Universities in the city, students form a significant proportion of Southampton’s total population – with both universities having a combined student population of over 30,000.The 2001 census showed that the city had a mainly white (92.4%) population. However, Southampton is becoming increasingly diverse and multi-cultural, particularly within its younger age groups. This trend of increasing diversity is particularly reflected within the school age population, with the proportion of pupils from black and minority ethnic communities rising from 10% in current Year 11 pupils to 19% for the current reception year cohort.
It is estimated that since 1st May 2004 between 6,000 and 10,000 migrants, mainly from Eastern European countries, have made Southampton their home. Many of these people are young adults without dependents who are making a positive contribution to the local economy.
