Reading is situated in the prosperous Thames Valley and covers an area of 40 square kilometres. It enjoys many economic advantages with a thriving economy, low unemployment and good transport links, with close proximity to the M4 and Heathrow airport. It has a number of high tech business parks and several international companies located within its boundary. It is the third most diverse local authority in the south east with over 60 languages spoken in local schools. Approximately 66% of homes are owner occupied and there is a high percentage of private rented accommodation (18 per cent). 

Reading is 153rd out of 354 English councils on the Rank of the Average of super output area (SOA) scores in the Index of Multiple Deprivation (where 1 is the most deprived). Eight out of 93 of the SOAs in Reading are within the 20% most deprived in England
