The city of Portsmouth is located in the south east of England. Portsmouth is a waterfront city on the south coast with a population of approximately 196,400, living in approximately 81, 700 households. The population density per hectare is higher than any other UK city outside of London. Approximately 8.1 per cent of the population are from minority ethnic communities with the largest minority ethnic groups including members of the Bangladeshi and Chinese communities.
The city has experienced a transition in employment over the past two decades following the scaling down of the Royal Navy Dockyard. However in summer 2007 the Naval Base Review secured the future of the base in Portsmouth which was very good news for the local economy. More jobs are now connected to the service industry, with a significant increase in the number of jobs supported by tourism.
Portsmouth is a designated New Growth Point as part of the Partnership for Urban South Hampshire (PUSH) which represents 11 local authorities and has worked on an economically-led growth plan for around the past 4 years. PUSH was also announced as a 'Priority Place' in October 2007 as part of the Government's growth plans through the Living Places Partnership.
