Boasting the largest population, largest industrial center, highest production, highest number of immigrants on record and the status of most cosmopolitan center in South America, São Paulo was built on migrant and immigrant work. The region, which displays the best infrastructure and qualified labor, is known as the "locomotive of Brazil" and its participation within the Brazilian banking system adds up to almost 50% of total volume. In the capital, which bears the same name as the State, business tourism alone is responsible for over 45 thousand events every year.
Situated in the Southeastern Region and bathed by the Atlantic Ocean, the coastline of São Paulo stretches along 622 kilometers dotted with beaches of all shapes and sizes. On the Northern coastline, beaches are scattered around towns such as Bertioga, São Sebastião, Caraguatatuba and Ubatuba, and on islands such as Ilhabela, a surfing and sailing paradise. In the Southern part, around the towns of Iguape and Cananéia, where some of the planet's most important nature reserves are located, such as the Juréia-Itatins ecological Station and Cardoso Island, in the area of Logamar - Iguape, Cananéia, Antonina and Paranaguá Lagoon Estuary Complex (Complexo Estuarino Lagunar de Iguape, Cananéia, Antonina e Paranaguá).
Separating the coast of São Paulo from the its plateau, the cliffs of the Serra do Mar Mountain Range, in the middle of the Atlantic Forest, represented a major obstacle to overcome in centuries past. Nowadays, this entrance gate to the State's inner region is the focus of attention for the Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve and for other organizations seeking to preserve this precious ecosystem, currently reduced, nationwide, to 5% of its original extension. Further towards the interior, tourists will find country estates, rural and ecotourism, towns with a European climate, waterfalls, caves, rivers, mountain ranges, mineral water springs, natural parks, 16th to 18th Century constructions, Jesuit architecture style churches and archeological sites.
