Lake Surprise is a 700m long lake in the crater of Mount Eccles fed by underground springs.
Mount Eccles is a mountain of scoria formed when lava was thrown into the air 20,000 years ago. This and other volcanoes such as Tower Hill, represents the last phase of volcanic activity in south-eastern Australia.
The geological features are of national significance. They are in an excellent state of preservation in one of the last substantial areas of public land on the newer volcanics.
