Taiwan offers extremely high standards of medical services at reasonable prices. The relatively new field of medical tourism has therefore seen steady growth in recent years, with many private clinics securing a stream of foreign patients for non-invasive treatments. In 2006, a government task force launched a three-year plan for developing medical tourism in Taiwan, the initial stage of which will promote cosmetic laser treatment, laser eye surgery, and dental services to Japanese tourists. In January 2006, National Taiwan University Hospital launched a set of services tailored specifically for foreign patients, and Taiwan's first government-backed medical tourism clinic was opened in November 2006 in the Howard Beach Resort in Kenting.
