Exeter is a cathedral city and the county town of Devon, and is situated on the River Exe inland from the south coast of the region. Exeter is a district authority of Devon County; however, it is currently bidding for unitary authority status. The major area of the authority is urban, making Exeter the eighth largest urban area in the South West.
Exeter is at the southern end of the M5, and, as such, is the gateway to the further South West peninsular via the A30 and A38. Traffic from the east is mostly via the A30/A303. Exeter is similarly well served and a central point for the rail network. Exeter International Airport, situated just outside the district boundary to the east, is the region’s second busiest airport.
With both city and county councils situated in Exeter, public administration is a major employer. There is also a large civil service presence in the city, including the headquarters of the Met Office. The University of Exeter has two campuses in the city, and the University of Plymouth also has a site here.
