In the heart of Little India in Georgetown, on the corner of Lebuh Chulia and Lebuh Queen, lies the Sri Mariamman Temple. Sri Mariamman is the oldest and, arguably, most famous Hindu temple in Malaysia.
Decorated in the colourful and distinct style of South Indian architecture, the temple is adorned with nearly 40 statuettes of Hindu Gods, Goddesses and sacred animals. Many of the statuettes are mounted on the impressive facade of the temple which rises over 23 feet high.
The interior is also adorned with various statues of Hindu Gods and Goddesses, including a priceless statue of Lord Subramaniam - the much respected Hindu deity, decorated in gold, diamonds and emeralds.
The quiet and peaceful air within the temple is broken only by the occasional cooing of the many doves that flock the temple grounds. Prayers are usually conducted by the temple priests in the early morning and visitors may observe these prayer sessions taking place.
