Sunderland is an urban area situated on the east coast and lies on the river Wear. It lies between the authorities of South Tyneside to the north and Easington to the south. Shipbuilding was the major traditional industry and at one time Sunderland had the largest shipbuilding port in the world. The port was used to export coal from the Durham coalfield. Industry in the area has diversified to include companies such as Nissan and Rolls Royce.
