Latvia, one of the three Baltic States, covers an area of 64,589 square kilometres, slightly smaller than Tasmania. Latvia's population is 2.3 million and has fallen by 11 per cent since re-gaining independence due to emigration and a falling birth rate. Fifty-nine per cent of the population in 2005 was ethnic Latvian, with the remainder made up mainly of Russians (28.6 per cent ), Belarusian (3.8 per cent ), Ukrainians (2.6 per cent ), Poles (2.5 per cent ) and Lithuanians (1.4 per cent ).
