Swansea is a city and county in South Wales, situated on the coast immediately to the east of the Gower Peninsula.
Swansea, Wales's second city, grew to its present importance during the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries, becoming a centre of heavy industry. Today it is a commercial centre that has attracted a number of high tech companies to its flagship waterfront development.
The Welsh Assembly Government recognises that each region is unique and requires a particular style of governance. For more information about this policy, read the section about the Wales Spatial Plan
