The country covers a total area of 455,3 square kilometers and is situated in western Indian ocean, northwest of Madagascar. It is situated between 4 to 10 degrees latitude south and between 46 to 56 longitude east.
It consists of 115 islands, of which 41 are granites and 74 coralline, from the archipelagos Seychelles, Amirantes, Aldabra, Cosmoledo, Farquhar with a total of 620 km-long coastline. The biggest one is Mahe (144 sq km), which is granite. The other islands , including the biggest atoll in the world (Aldabra), are coral. After Mahe, the most visited islands are Praslin, La Digue, Bird, Fregate, Silhouette, and Desroches.
The name "Seychelles" honors the French minister of finance under King Louis XV.
Victoria, the smallest capital in the world is the economic and administrative centre of the islands, a typical lively Creole town, a melting pot of different races and cultures.
