Geographical position
The geographical position of Guinea Bissau is: between 13° and 17° of western length and 11° and 12° of north breadth. The republic borders on Senegal (border: 338 km) in the north and in the east to Guinea (common border: 386 km). The total length of the border is 724 kilometres, 350 kilometres of coast are.
With a total area of 36.125 km² the country is approx. 10% smaller than Switzerland. Merely approx. 78% of this area is mainland. The geographical coordinates of the capital Bissau are 11° 50' of northern breadth and 15° 36' of western length.
Landscape
Close to the predominantly flat inland region there is a coastal strip that has come by marine erosion. In front of the mainland there is the Bissagos-Archipelago in the Atlantic. The highest mountain is the Madina do Boé with 262 m. The most important rivers are Río Gêba, Río Cacheu and Río Corubal. The most important islands of Guinea Bissau are Arch. do Bijagós: Ilha de Orango, Caravela, Bubaque, Roxa, Bolama, Uno and Formosa.
The largest towns in Guinea Bissau are (state: January 1st 2005): Bissau 388.028 inhabitants, Bafatá 22.521 inhabitants, Gabú 14.430 inhabitants, Bissorã 12.688, Bolama 10.769 inhabitants and Cacheu 10.490 inhabitants. Ports can be found in the cities Bissau, Buba, Cacheu and Farim.
